Become a Contributor

What is a Contributor?

A contributor is defined as any E2 Noder who contributes at least one new or updated node to this site that can be used in calculating the E2 Statistics during a one month period.

In other words, your status as a contributor lasts for one month from your most recent submission.

EXAMPLE: You submit one or more new or updated nodes on 1/6/2009. If you do not contribute any more nodes, your contributor status will last until 2/6/2009. But if, for example, you contribute again on 1/20/2009, your contributor status will be extended to 2/20/2009.

Why should I contribute?

  • You will be helping to make the site more accurate and useful to yourself and other noders.

How do I become a Contributor?

Currently, the only way to contribute node information is through my client, the E2 Explorer. I am also working on a way to contribute through JavaScript in the Notelet Nodelet.

I don't feel comfortable sending you my voting data.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Participation is completely voluntary
  • Participation is opt-in (i.e., off by default)
  • No personal information about your individual votes (i.e., whether you upvoted or downvoted a writeup) will be submitted. That information is private, and is not collected. All that is collected about votes is the total number of upvotes, the total number of downvotes, and the total reputation on a writeup.

See the next item for more information.

What kind of information is submitted when I contribute?

That depends on the type of node:

Data/Type user (homenode) e2node (nodeshell) writeup superdoc usergroup room All other types
node_id X X X X X X X
title X X X X X X X
node type X X X X X X X
author X X X X X X X
create time X X X X X X X
length X X X X X X X
reputation     X
upvotes     X
downvotes     X
# cools X (total spent)   X
# writeups X (written) X (in nodeshell)
XP X
level X
last seen X

Other data that is submitted includes your username (so you can be given credit and be marked as a contributor), when you submitted the information, and when it was gathered. The combination of this information allows for the calculation of numerous other pieces of data including merit, devotion, node-fu, and much more.

What is NOT collected:

  • Personal information that is only available to you such as Karma (Golden Trinkets), the number of votes and C!s you have left, what room you are in, your personal nodes, and your borg status.
  • As stated above, we also do not collect your personal votes (whether you upvoted or downvoted a writeup).

How do I use the E2 Explorer to contribute?

Once you log into the E2 Explorer, you will see a Client Notification on the right-hand side of the browser window. Click the "Node Statistics Project" link, and select the level of participation you wish to contribute. Your data will be submitted each time you log into the client.

What is a "new" or "updated" node?

Since this site relies soley on user submissions, I don't have information on every single E2 node in the database. A "new" node is a node that is not currently in the database. It could have been created today, or 5 years ago - it doesn't matter - it's new to me.

Statistics about nodes (upvotes, downvotes, reputation, cools, etc.) change often. Therefore once the information in submitted, it may become outdated. If you submit a node that is already in the database, and your information is newer than the information we already have, that is considered an "update".

So if I contribute something that is not "new" or "updated" I don't get credit for it?

Correct. If we already have the information you are trying to submit, then it's not really a contribution. This does not happen often. In fact, the only way this becomes an issue is if you use the E2 Explorer (during which time information about the nodes you browse are saved to a database), then close it, and don't use it again for a long time. The information that was saved the last time you used the client may be old or outdated, and not useful for this site.

Who has contributed to the site so far?

A list of contributors can be found on our Contributors page.

Why is my number of contributions getting smaller?

I only track the most recent submissions for each node. If someone submits a more recent update to a node that you have submitted in the past, then they will get the credit for it. Don't worry though - even if your number of contributions drops to zero, you are still considered a contributor for one month since the date of your last contribution.
